Is it Time for Air Conditioner Service or Replacement?

January 05, 2016

When any big change in weather hits and we start receiving calls about air conditioners that aren't generating cool air, most of them can be linked back to irregular air conditioner service and maintenance. If air conditioner issues are not handled, your system could suddenly stop operating and leave you and your family out to dry. However, there are a couple warning signs you can watch for to know when it's time for air conditioner service or replacement before your system quits working.

Air Conditioner Age

The average life expectancy of air conditioners is between 12-17 years. If your air conditioner is 15 years or older it's a good idea to start air conditioner shopping now. Selecting a new air conditioner isn't a decision you want to have to make on the fly. Give yourself plenty of time to research and weigh all of your options.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Air conditioners lose efficiency as they get older and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been correctly maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that you could spend on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Air Conditioner Repairs

The last two years of an air conditioner’s life are when your system ends up with the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on air conditioner repair the previous two years - a new system might be more cost efficient.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any weird sounds coming from your system? Air conditioners start making strange noises around the end of their lifecycle. If your air conditioner is cycling on and off frequently or blowing chilly air, it's time to look at getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older air conditioners don't humidify or filter the air in your home all that well. Your home may start feeling stuffy and any family members with allergies might notice more symptoms. A few other red flags are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.

If any of these red flags sound like what you are undergoing with your air conditioner, it may be time to start looking into a new system.
