Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely made it through winter in Rapid City just yet. Mother Nature may have a few nice days, but she’s always prepared to remind us that she’s in full control. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call a professional out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall could bury your air conditioner in the snow, hurting its performance when the temperatures begin to warm up for the season. Not to mention it can hinder a high-efficiency system from running as such. The situation could become an even greater problem too if you don’t plan for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are things you can do as a homeowner to help your air conditioner run properly even though snow has fallen or could fall in the coming days and weeks.

  1. Ensure you have a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Walk around the area routinely to make sure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that may have built up throughout the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, covering your air conditioner may end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner could be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, possibly meaning damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Rapid City will more than likely swing up and down over the last few days of cold weather, you can’t count out the possibility of weather that can alter the performance of your air conditioner. At Street Heating and Cooling in Rapid City, we are always available to check any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re about air conditioner service or adding a new system.
