Five Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Isn't Cooling Your House

When it’s a searing summer morning in Rapid City, nothing is worse than recognizing your home comfort system isn’t working the way it should. The last thing you should have to do is request AC service. But your HVAC is an incredibly complicated system, so it can be almost impossible to discover what’s driving the problem without training.

That’s why Street Heating and Cooling wrote this handbook to help you see what may be going on with your cooling system. Here, you’ll learn a few usual explanations for why your place is feeling too warm. And while a couple of these are easy DIY activities, you might still need to turn to a skilled technician for home comfort system repair.

And if you need us, Street Heating and Cooling is prepared to take care of your home. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your house in Rapid City.

1. Your Device Settings Are Off

Every person sets their thermostat a bit differently to match their distinct requirements. Even so, a number of families make the misstep of setting their device to “On” as opposed to “Auto.” Because of this setting, the fan in your air conditioner will continue to produce an air current even when you’ve attained your desired temperature.

This can come off like your AC is pushing out warm air, when in reality it’s only employing the fan more often than needed. Change this setting and see if things change.

2. Your System Needs a Good Cleaning

There are two principal areas to examine for dirt or dust collection when your cooling system doesn’t appear to be working well.

First off, check out your system’s filter. If you don’t swap out your filter on a regular basis, built-up dust can make it more difficult for air to move through and lower the temperature your home. If your filter is clearly dirty or dusty, it’s definitely time for a substitute. (And in general, you have to switch it about once every three months or more frequently.)

If your filter seems good, head to your outdoor unit. Double check there’s a reasonable amount of room around the unit and clean up plants or debris around it. This section of your AC lets out the heat from your house. If the coils outside are clogged, you won’t be feeling cool indoors.

We recommend scheduling professional air conditioner maintenance annually to keep your system operating like it should and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your AC is Releasing Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the stuff that chills the air in your space. It cycles between your inside and external units to soak up and release heat, to help your place remain the right temperature. If there is a break along the way, you won’t be feeling comfortable again until you set professional air conditioning repair.

Signals of a refrigerant leak include a lack of treated air, pricier electric expenses, frozen evaporator coils and unusual hissing noises coming from your AC.

If you are worried refrigerant could be leaking, call Street Heating and Cooling for system repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be hazardous to your family’s health.

4. One or More Pieces Should Be Replaced

Your AC contains a a handful of key parts. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If one part is broken, your home comfort will suffer.

Our Street Heating and Cooling experts are certified and experienced in HVAC. They can help you figure out and fix any trouble.

5. Your AC Should Be Upgraded

If your air conditioner is more than 10 years old, it may be about time to research new air conditioner installation. As your system gets older, it just won’t work as well as it has in the past. And it could be making your space too warm.

If your system is on the younger side but still isn’t properly cooling your home, it might be undersized for your household. HVAC systems are not all the same. An AC that’s undersized absolutely can’t chill a place the way an accurately sized AC can.
