Five Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Isn't Cooling Your Home

July 10, 2020

When it’s a searing summer morning in Rapid City, nothing could be worse than figuring out your cooling system isn’t functioning the way it should. The last thing you want to do is schedule HVAC service. But your air conditioner is a fairly involved system, so it can be challenging to discern what’s driving the problem on your own.

That’s why Street Heating and Cooling made this handbook to help you find out what might be happening with your home comfort system. Here, you’ll discover a few everyday situtations that explain why your house is feeling a little unpleasant. And though some of these are straightforward DIY projects, you may need to find a professional for AC repair.

And if need help, Street Heating and Cooling is prepared to take care of your home. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your house in Rapid City.

1. Your Thermostat Settings Could Be Incorrect

Everyone sets their thermostat a bit differently to work with their personal preferences. Still, many families make the misstep of setting their thermostat to “On” as opposed to “Auto.” Under this setting, the fan in your system will continue to push out air even after you’ve achieved your preferred temperature.

This can seem like your ducts are releasing warmish air, when really it’s simply utilizing the fan more frequently than needed. Switch this setting and see if things cool off.

2. Your Cooling System Needs Some Cleaning

There are two primary spaces to investigate for dirt or dust accumulation when your AC doesn’t appear to be performing right.

Before anything else, inspect your system’s filter. If you don’t replace your filter often enough, accumulated dirt can make it more difficult for air to flow through and cool down your house. If your filter is obviously dirty or dusty, it’s probably time for a change. (And for best operation, you have to switch it about once every three months at a minimum.)

If your filter seems fine, go to your outside unit. Make sure there’s enough room around the unit and clear any plants or litter stuck there. This part of your AC lets off the heat from inside your space. If the coils outside are closed off, you won’t be cool in your home.

We recommend setting professional air conditioner maintenance each year to keep your unit running like it should and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your System is Releasing Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the material that chills the air in your space. It moves between your inside and outdoor system pieces to soak up and discharge heat, to help your rooms keep cool. If there is a leak somewhere, you won’t be feeling comfortable again until you schedule professional air conditioning repair.

Indicators of a refrigerant leak include a decline in chilled air, larger energy bills, frozen evaporator coils and odd hissing noises originating from your system.

If you are worried refrigerant might be leaking, call Street Heating and Cooling for air conditioner repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be damaging to your family’s health.

4. One or More Elements Have to Be Replaced

Your system is made up of a a handful of important pieces. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If one of these is broken, your home comfort will suffer.

Our Street Heating and Cooling pros are certified and skilled in all areas of HVAC. They can help you find and repair any problem.

5. Your AC Should Be Replaced

If your system is upward of 10 years old, it could likely be a good time to consider new air conditioner installation. As your system gets up there in years, it just won’t run as well as it has in the past. And it might be making your home too warm.

If your air conditioner is more current but still isn’t cutting it, it could be undersized for your home. Air conditioners are not all the same. An AC that’s undersized simply can’t help a home the way an accurately sized system can.
